The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. The 2012 Lincoln event will start on Friday, September 7th, in Avery Hall on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Seth Meranda

Seth Meranda has designed and developed web applications his entire
professional career. As an academically trained marketer, Seth focuses on
user experience and interface, design, usability, web analytics, and
front-end web technologies. Currently, as the User Experience Architect for
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Seth oversees UX/UI of
the institution's website and dozens of supporting web apps. In addition,
Seth is an adjunct professor in the College of Journalism at UNL where he
teaches web development.

Mark Crawford

CEO and Investment Manager at Invest Nebraska

Mark is the Chief Executive Officer and Investment Manager at Invest Nebraska. He previously worked at SFI Financial, a $45 million venture fund providing growth capital to companies in the defense, security, and IT industries. Prior to SFI Financial, Mark was employed at Development Capital Ventures, a private equity firm focusing on mid to late stage growth capital financings, leveraged buyouts, and recapitalizations in the manufacturing and distribution sectors. Since completing his degree at Tufts University, Mark has spent over 15 years in venture capital, private equity and M&A. He has deployed over $120 million in capital and closed over 40 transactions. He is a graduate of the Venture Capital Institute.

Monte Froehlich

I have 10 years of dairy processing experience, primarily as a Quality Control Manager. I once won a buttermilk contest. Kind of weird, I know, but I love dairy products!
Then spent a couple of years at as a financial analyst for Harris Laboratories, a few months as a finance manager for Nashua Label in Omaha, and then left the corporate world in 1995 to focus on real estate development and commercial real estate brokerage. I really enjoy helping business people find space that maximizes their potential.
Lately, we've sold several properties in Lincoln and have made acquisitions in PA, IL, IN, ND, and KS. Several different property types but my favorite are historic renovations.

Alice Dittman

Former President and CEO of Cornhusker Bank

Alice Dittman is the first woman chair of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the first woman chair of the
Bryan Hospital Board of Directors, the first female chair of the State of Nebraska Chamber of
Commerce, the first woman president of Nebraska Bankers Association, and the first woman
chair of the Community Bankers Association (a division of the American Bankers Association).
Alice Dittman has been a pioneer in business in Nebraska.

Chuck Norris

Vice President of Nelnet Capital

Charles (Chuck) Norris has been part of the Nelnet organization for more than 20 years. During this time, Chuck helped start Infovisa, a trust software company located in Charlotte, N.C., and he currently sits on its board. In addition, Chuck is one of the founders of Nelnet Capital, LLC, a registered Broker/Dealer located in Lincoln, Nebraska. Prior to joining Nelnet, Chuck was a Financial Analyst for Merrill Lynch in New York City. Chuck also worked for Wilshire Associates located in Santa Monica, Calif.

Chuck was born and raised in Lincoln where he and his wife, Jean, live with their two children. Chuck has a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Working from NYC to San Francisco Paul has launched million dollar brands like Neebo and campaigns for Lowe's. This former Division 1 athlete works well on teams and can tackle anything.


From NYC to S.F. Stephanie has helped grow brands like Jergans, Curel and Ban. Her management background turbo boosted her on the Creative side to become an Interactive Designer for big brands like LeapFrog, TD Ameritrade and Complete Nutrition. Her vast marketing background, management ability, killer creativity, online/offline skill set and ability to get-it-right-the-first-time make her a dynamic force in the startup world.

John Radway

Marcus Tooze

Mr. Tooze is a graduate of the University of London and University of Illinois and has resided in Nebraska for over 15 years, originally emigrating from the UK in 1992. Mr. Tooze started GIS Workshop, Inc. in his east campus house basement in 1998 and has grown the company to a team of 20 providing customized geospatial software solutions to a variety of clients in the Midwest.

David Milligan

Christopher Kingsley

Christopher started a virtual tour portal called ROUNDUS in late 2005, growing that company until it was acquired in 2008. After taking on new partners, he ran the previous agency and parent company, Roundscapes, prior to founding 42.

His willingness to trust people to innovate and take calculated risks has been a core part of the culture as the company has grown from a few people to more than 25 employees.
